The 2026/27 European season ends with two nights that football fans in Bahrain and across the Gulf will not forget. One of them is in Frankfurt, Germany, and the other in the Spanish capital, Madrid. UEFA settled the venues for both finals a long while ago, and now the dates are clear for supporters who want to plan early — whether that means booking tickets or simply knowing when to sit down in front of the screen.
In this article we go through everything that matters: where the 2027 Champions League final will be held, where the 2027 Europa League final will be played, the format each competition follows, and how the play-off round works — a stage that has become one of the most important points of the season since both competitions changed shape.
The 2027 Champions League final will be played on Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, the home of Atlético Madrid. The ground opened in 2017 with a capacity of around 70,000, and it holds UEFA’s highest stadium classification. Kick-off is expected at 6pm Central European Time, which is roughly 7pm in Bahrain, although UEFA usually confirms the final time closer to the date.
This will be the second time the Metropolitano has hosted a Champions League final in under ten years. The first was in 2019, when two English sides met and Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to claim their sixth title. With this, Madrid will have staged Europe’s biggest final six times, a total surpassed only by London.
The route to the decision was not a straightforward one. The San Siro in Milan was originally selected, but UEFA withdrew the hosting rights in September 2024 after failing to receive sufficient guarantees about the stadium’s readiness given the renovation projects under discussion. The bidding process reopened in October 2024 and drew only two applications: Madrid and Baku in Azerbaijan. UEFA’s executive committee met in Tirana, the Albanian capital, on 11 September 2025 and awarded the final to Madrid.
The team lifting the trophy in Madrid does not simply take the title. The winner is guaranteed a meeting with the Europa League champions in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup, takes part in the 2027 Intercontinental Cup final, and qualifies for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. On top of all that, they secure their place in the league phase of the 2027/28 Champions League if they have not already qualified through their domestic league.
The 2027 Europa League final will be played on Wednesday 26 May 2027 at Frankfurt Stadium (known as the Waldstadion) in Frankfurt, Germany. Notably, the date falls roughly ten days before the Champions League final, giving supporters the chance to follow both competitions without a clash.
The 2026/27 edition is the 56th staging of the competition, and the eighteenth since it was renamed from the UEFA Cup to the Europa League. The season begins on 9 July 2026 with the preliminary rounds and runs through to the final in May 2027.
UEFA’s conditions for selecting a final venue were clear: a natural grass surface, category four classification (the highest tier), and a capacity preferably between 40,000 and 60,000. Frankfurt Stadium met those conditions and was awarded the final following a bidding process that began in May 2023 and concluded with the host being appointed in May 2024.
As for the rewards, the Europa League winner meets the Champions League winner in the 2027 UEFA Super Cup, and — more significantly — qualifies directly for the league phase of the following season’s Champions League. If the club has already secured qualification through its domestic league position, UEFA redistributes the place among the other associations according to its order of priority.
For reference, the previous final was played in Istanbul in May 2026, where Aston Villa of England beat Freiburg of Germany 3-0. This time a German club would be playing at home if any Bundesliga side reaches the closing match.
Since the 2024/25 season the format has been shared between the Champions League and the Europa League: 36 teams in each competition, in a single table that includes all of them rather than the old group stage. Each team plays only eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. The teams are divided into four pots (seedings) with nine clubs in each, and every team faces opponents from each pot: one at home and one away.
Once the eight matches are complete, a single 36-place table emerges, and it is divided as follows: the teams placed first to eighth qualify directly for the round of 16 and skip an additional round. Teams from ninth to twenty-fourth drop into the play-off round. Anyone finishing twenty-fifth or below leaves the competition entirely.
The play-off matches are played over two legs. The teams that finished between 9th and 16th are seeded and play the return leg at home, a clear advantage since the final period is in front of their own supporters. The seeded clubs face teams placed between 17th and 24th. The winner of each tie advances to the round of 16 to meet one of the top eight, and the away goals rule has been abolished — meaning that if the aggregate score is level, the tie goes to extra time and then penalties.
The points system in the league phase is simple and works like any ordinary league: three points for a win, one for a draw, nothing for a defeat. If teams finish level on points, the ranking is settled first by goal difference, then goals scored, then number of wins, followed by other criteria set out in UEFA’s competition regulations. That makes every goal significant from the opening round, because a difference of one goal can move you from a position that puts you straight into the round of 16 to one that drops you into the play-offs.
In the Champions League, 29 teams qualify directly for the league phase, with seven places determined through qualifying that concludes with the play-off in August 2026. In the Europa League, 13 teams enter directly, 12 places come through qualifying, and 11 places go to clubs eliminated in the Champions League play-off. This structure is designed to ensure that clubs from at least 37 national associations are represented in the league phase of one of the three competitions.
The Champions League league-phase draw takes place on 27 August 2026, with the Europa League draw the following day on 28 August 2026. The play-off draws for both competitions are scheduled for late January 2027, while the draws for the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals will be held on 26 February 2027 at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
Most Europa League matches are played on Thursday evenings, with the exception of the first matchday, which is spread across two days, and the final, which this year falls on a Wednesday. Champions League matches are played on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and this separation of days is deliberate so that supporters can follow both competitions without fixture clashes.
In summary, the 2026/27 European season has two major landmarks: Frankfurt on 26 May 2027 for the Europa League final, and Madrid on 5 June 2027 for the Champions League final. Between those dates and the start of the season in September lies a long journey through eight league-phase matchdays, then an unforgiving play-off round, and after that four knockout rounds played over two legs. Anyone following from Bahrain can mark the dates now, because most of the important fixtures kick off at a time well suited to viewing in the region.
